Jackdaw Chatter - The Quarterly Magazine about Stow-cum-Quy

Q U Y W.I.

In December, Quy W.I. members enjoyed a hot festive meal prepared by the Committee, for their Christmas party which was held in the Village Hall. June Miles proposed a toast to the continuing success of the W.I. for the New Year. After the meal, five members staged a mini-pantomime ‘Cinderella’ which caused much amusement amongst members. This was followed by a seasonal quiz and the exchange of Secret Santa Christmas presents.
In January, members welcomed Brenda Millington-Paul from Lode to hear her fascinating talk on her career in textiles. She was taught to knit and sew at an early age and on leaving school, went on to Art College. She and a friend regularly hitch-hiked round the area to hear their favourite pop groups, and began by making various belts for the groups, followed by brightly coloured shirts and other accessories. After leaving College, Brenda went on to work at the Royal Opera House making both mens and ladies costumes for the Ballets. After leaving the Opera House, she set up her own boutique in London and specialised in designing and making evening gowns. On coming to the Cambridge area, she worked for Jaeger, and now enjoys baking and craft making for the W.I. Country Markets.
In February our members enjoyed a talk and demonstration on the craft of Tea Bag Folding by Viv Fleet, a local resident. Members were wondering how this could be achieved but it is not the perforated tea bag that is folded but the individual sachets that were originally used to package tea bags. The craft started in Holland by a lady who was enjoying a cup of tea in a café, who suddenly realised it was her friends birthday that week, so she gathered eight tea bag sachets and folded them to form a rosette which she then mounted on a plain card and sent it off in the post, and the trend for this creative craft had begun. Numerous books have been published on this subject and craft shops have a wide range of blank card and accessories to choose from, but those with computers can down-load ideas and print off good quality coloured paper to experiment with this craft.
For the benefit of any new residents in our Village, Quy W.I. is held on the first Tuesday of every month in the Village Hall (The Hut) at 7.30 p.m. where newcomers will be made most welcome to join our friendly meetings with a variety of speakers with slides, talks and demonstrations on lots of interesting subjects. For further information, please contact Joan Froment on 01223 293700 or look for details of our next meeting on the poster in Quy Post Office shop window.
