JACKDAW CLUB

COFFEE MORNING SATURDAY 15TH DECEMBER 2007

The coffee morning was held in the Village Hall in aid of the Jackdaw Club. In all, it made a very useful £160 towards the funds.
Maureen and Graham were assisted on the day by Joan and Linda Crisp on the bookstall and bric a brac, Anne Moore on the bottle stall and by way of a change, with Lily Theobald on holiday, Mal Hatley took over the raffle. In the kitchen were Kath Chapman and Mary Sanderson dispensing refreshments through the hatch.
It must be stressed that without support for these events by everyone during the year, events such as the Christmas Party and Outing will not be able to continue. The party alone can cost around £800 to put on and it does not take an "A" level in Maths to realise the pot of money will soon run out. If you want the Jackdaw Club to continue please come along and support the fund raising efforts. Perhaps you could do some fund raising of your own.
JACKDAW CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
On Saturday 19th January 2008 the Jackdaw Christmas Party took place in the Village Hall at 5.30pm for 51 over 60’s from the village. On arrival at the door we were welcomed by Graham and Maureen Norden, and handed a sherry or soft drink, and after a quick chat around old friends and acquaintances found ourselves a table and settled in.
The food has always been very good and this year was no exception. On the menu was Citrus Fruit Cocktail, Chicken Chasseur with roast potatoes, peas, carrots and broccoli. No time to hang around now for they were soon followed by triple chocolate gateaux, cheese and biscuits, mince pies and tea or coffee. Pretty good meal you say, oh yes, but add in copious amounts of red or white wine, in some cases both, and it becomes a feast.
Graham did his best to make a few announcements but his voice was sadly lacking. I am sure it was a heavy cold and not the wine that had that effect on him. He managed to introduce some old friends to do the entertaining. These were a very good group called Memory Lane who soon got us joining in to favourites old and new. No, not ‘A Long Way to Tipperary’ or ‘Pack up your Troubles’, they included songs such as the ‘Runaway Train’, McNamara’s Band and I think one called ‘Piano Man’ or something. It was good wine as I said.
McNamara never had such a distinguished group of musicians, Helen Cox on cymbals, Bill Watts on flute, Geoff Hall drums and the Vicar blowing the horn, to name only a few. I thought at this point we had reached the finale, for it could not be bettered. How wrong I was for Act.Sqdn.Ldr. Norden led a fly past of the Catering Quartet with supporting cast all in close formation to the Dam Busters March. After we closed the hangar doors, marched the band away and settled in our seats Maureen carried out the Grand Draw. Loads of prizes on offer all but one donated by guests, the box of groceries made up by Maureen from items left over from the Christmas coffee morning. £122.00 from sale of tickets was added to the funds.
Time to go home after a very good evening out. Geoff Hall eloquently expressed a very big thank you to Maureen, Graham and their helpers on behalf of everyone present for their hard work in organising such a fun evening.
Can I now, through the Jackdaw Chatter, repeat those thanks to Maureen and Graham who were ably assisted by Trevor, Darren and James as waiters and Anne, Linda, Joan and Kate in the kitchen. Mal Hatley worked well on the Friday preparing the kitchen for use, and ironing all the tablecloths, well done Mal. I am sure we all had a lovely time and can’t wait until the next event. Perhaps a few of the shy over 60’s who never come may give it a try next year. Believe me you will have a great time.
